Growing Confidence & Education

The US has the problem of great potential and expectations, it’s not a bad thing, the Yankees and UCS have a similar air about them. We want to be on top, we expect to be on top. We have been humbled over the last decade as we were shell shocked by the housing market’s collapse and 9/11. One thing has not changed though, we still have remarkable universities.

While we talk of turning on US manufacturing, exporting energy, and the gems of Silicon Valley, we can’t forget the greatness of our higher ED, they set the stage for our development and leadership in almost every field of discovery. With the war drums mellowing, we need to keep feeding our schools for innovation, and I think it would be a shame to give up the NASA program too. Most our great discoveries come from us simply pushing ourselves, we don’t know our own limits, because we really don’t have any.

Granted, some goals are more achievable that others, but we have yet to find the end of human potential. The US has so many reasons to feel string and proud, it’s not time for us to give up pushing ourselves now, we just have to get back to the meat and potatoes of development, infrastructure and education.

Instagram’s value & the new frontier

Mark Zuckerberg has gotten where he is by making educated bets on the new frontier. The world has changed, the web connected all of us and we’re figuring out what we want to do with that. The reason why Instagram could be sold for more money that a lot of name brands are worth was because it has become a main staple of the new frontier.

Much like how the giants of old would absorbs patents and potential competition, Facebook is the 800 pound gorilla in the room that can do what it wants. There has been worry about the US loosing it’s position, or slipping back in the global competition, but our universities are still amazing, and I have feeling we will be the leaders of innovation for a long time to come. I hope that we can focus on quality manufacturing too. (Louie Vuitton encouraged France to focus on quality while everyone else was industrializing, just saying.)

America’s brightest days are not behind it, and luckily we’ll have some super hip Instagrmic pic to document it all. Enjoy the journey my friends.

Scrambling Versus Having Your Feet Set

My older brother and I got back into climbing this weekend. He led for the first time outdoors, I got the anchor off the wall, about 80 feet up…

It is interesting, I work with him, we tend to argue at times, but there is something about coming together for that level of challenge that is extremely gratifying.

Planning is part of the process. We have to know where the rocks are, the difficulty of the route, and how much gear we will need. Once we are set there is a level of coolness that is needed to get to competitive greatness.
I through myself right at the wall, it had been a while, but after my first slip I started getting my feet under me and the climb went way better. You have got to have a plan, and then you have to have the coolness to let the climb take you where it does. There is no way to be set up for all the eventualities, but it is helpful to know what the start and finish look like.

Professionally, I am in the logistics industry. There is no way to have everything planned before a project starts, but it is my job to know the needs, resources, and the possible eventualities. Give yourself reasons to be confident. Know your subject, know your goals, know yourself. People are looking for individuals that they can depend on in difficult times, the more you know your circumstance and the situations around you, the better able you will be to meet needs and grow your reach of opportunity.

Enjoy the journey!

Starbucks in Downtown LA

North Orange county has some diversity, definitely, but the Starbucks in the middle of the financial district in Downtown LA is pretty mind blowing, you have homeless people taking over the bathroom and millionaires grabbing lattes.

The other wild part is how people from these separate worlds can be crammed into the same room, and still so divided. So many of us don’t understand the fundamentals of the rich, and what really keeps the poor poor.

Diet, education, location, neurochemistry and biology, there are so many factors that make us us! For some reason though, I feel like 90% of the problem and solution come down to how we handle stress hormones, and what we look to for the production of dopamine and endorphins, the body’s natural feel good drugs.

I have got none of this figured out, I just know what it feels like to be in holistic good rhythms, and I know when I am off point. Really, the positive turn around seem to come with a night of good sleep, and I am broken out of the rhythm by tuff nights or long days.

I guess the trick is paying attention to how fall, and looking for the best way we get back up.

It is a good idea to break down ideological barriers. The world is changing; there are chances for collaboration and innovation that would’ve seemed absurd 20 years ago. We need to be working as integral units, multifaceted teams that our parents couldn’t have scene forming, across disciplines, languages and the globe, coming together to tackle the toughest problems the world has ever faced.

We are here now, and it also seems to be the first time the Western World, but we are looking past today. Native American used to make decisions based on a seven generation philosophy, reflecting on the idea that what they did would impact the next seven generations. We are making strides, there’s room to grow, but I am hopeful. The biggest thing that I believe we should focus on is lessoning the waist that’s a part of our excess in the United States.

Uneaten restaurant food should be able to get to shelters easier, and we need to come up with some creative ways to do ride sharing in SoCal. Those two are simple ideas, but I think they are solid places to start. It’s time to break down barriers of all typ

Simple Observations

KIA had the largest growth of any Asian car manufacturer last year, Red Box gave the final push to classic video rental operations, and neither operation was big on the radar two years ago.  The need was there for low cost of entry entry/commitment in the video rental and auto movie industry.

Toyota and Honda had grown to expensive, and domestic car brands weren’t in position to fill up the bottom of the market.  Somebody had to grab ahold of the bottom of the market.  Toyota had tried to diversify, and had some success with their “Scion” brand, which actually means offspring of royalty.  Hondas Civic is now even stepping up in price, and letting consumers down with exaggerated mileage claims for their hybrid models.  The resent rerelease of the CRX seemed way to expensive for its pint sized package, its level of performance even seemed underwhelming.

The US population wants its domestic cars to succeed, but we haven’t quite honed in on the small car market yet.  We have had attempts, but years of GM and Ford being able to get away with just about anything (like ripping their first electric cars off of the market, regardless of their praise) left them slightly lethargic when it comes to the needed evolution.

Korea has historically been a war torn country, caught between Japan and China in ancient pushes and pulls of aggression.  It was less than 5 decades ago that they really had an opportunity to start building their nation.  One of Korea’s first great companies was Hyundai, they made a major push to create the world’s best freight tankers.  From there Hyundai moved onto cars.

Japanese cars kept growing, the US cars took a hard hit and left the door right open for the bottom of the market open for Korea cars.  With all the potential consumers, it’s not to shabby of place to be, and Hyundai is already pushing to the next level with its “Genesis” line.

We had classic video rental stores which were a big help in avoiding $20 purchases, if you could get the film returned on time, it was great!  But what happens when people can start getting videos from the web?  The interactive community and cooperative nature of the web allowed for collectives to form around a myriad of topics, video rentals, car sharing, you name it, it most likely can be shared on the web!

Next comes Red Box, a place that counters the complexity of the web for the everyday walk up user.  Maybe there will be a similar set up for cars that people can join outside of utilizing web resources?  For every complex system we see immerging on the internet, I would look for mirrored entities to service the underground; its economy evolves at such an alarming rate.

Slums in India, Inner cities, they all have similar power dynamics to corporate culture and US Politics.  Similarly, people relieve stress through drugs, alcohol, exercise, laughter and a myriad of other ways.  If you want somebody to live a happier, better life, look at the stressors, their means of getting what they want, and the coping mechanisms that they are utilizing.

People are going to rent cheap movies because they need relief, and people are looking for reliable cheap cars because they have to get places.  It doesn’t matter if it is flashy, Wallmart is arguably the biggest company in the world and it is one of few that market to the poor, look for and meet needs in a simple and reliable way and you will be warm and well fed.  Good luck, enjoy!

The Necessity of Art in Business

At its foundation is the combination of “creative skill and imagination,” thank you “Google Define,” if we want to rise above the rest we have to differentiate ourselves by the pursuit of excellence and the ability to revisit what can be.  Sometimes going forward is taking a step back, simplicity can be the key.  Other times you might have to step out of your comfort zone and see how another aspect of related business might be beneficial for you to step into.

A quick warning about that last idea, if you do look to step into a related aspect of business, make sure if won’t negatively affect any revenue or information streams that you currently have.

You can simplify your approach, you can add a related revenue stream that you have familiarity to through your industry, or you can market in new innovative ways.  Any one of these approaches will take new and innovative ideas, but that last place you will want to check is your current client base, are there better ways you could serve them?  Are there added services that could bring you more revenue and help them focus on what they do best?

This is a touchy game because a lot of customers like you because you service their accounts a certain ways.  Maybe you could service new accounts in a way that would benefit your firm (and the customer) in the long-term, while caring for your current ones as you do.  You don’t try to reinvent the wheel, but there could be good money in finally setting society up with a reliable jet-pack, after all, it is 2012!

Competition

Chasing Office Relocation business is an interesting game, especially when you feel like your company is the best. What do you do when you know the shortcomings of a competitor? Ronald Regan said to never speak ill of another Republican, does the same rule apply to fellow moving companies?

How do we want to win is the big question. Do we want to win by price, company name? Do we want to purely outsell the other guy? What is the long-term goal, and how can we make something happen today?

The first step to success in all of this is quality. People change jobs within an industry regularly, and you want contacts to be comfortable recommending you at their next stop. There’s money to make in up economies, and for most aspects of business, people still have operational expenses in down time. If your price is grounded to your relative cost (so you don’t get greedy) you’ll be in the game, as long as you remember the quality part. Beyond how you do your business, and the price tag you put on it, what do you do about that pesky competition?

When you are in the dead heat of deal, your greatest asset is going to be your responsiveness, ability to listen and the customer has to feel heard. Dropping price isn’t always the answer, and those deals aren’t that fun to be in anyways. You might have to be flexible, but stay proud and on point.

The best way I have found to get to deals is to find the person that is one threshold above your usual decision maker, or the person who will have early info that pertains to the timeline of your deals. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people that you perceive as past your usual realm of conversation, just make sure you have something to say, and usually error on the side of brevity.

Talking bad on competition won’t get you ahead, at best, it will bring you both down. Know and play your game, rise above! Know your industry and pursue being the best at what you do. Game on!

Getting Comfortable

Spending is up. We are looking at the next election. We seem to be getting over this never ending war mentality. Life is going on.

With Occupy Wall Street losing momentum, people beginning to really appreciate the little things, I would say the sun is starting to rise on the new world. We are getting comfortable.

Win wins seem to be more important than ever. People are getting smarter and more aware.  We are struggling, we have to get savvy.

Cuba and North Korea were cut off from oil at about the same time, in the 70s. Cubataught it’s people to organically farm, many North Koreas starved. We have toi step up an learn self sufficiency if things are getting lean. How good were the good days? Could SUVs have gotten any bigger? And how much fast/restaurant food do we really need?

Stay up, keep your head up, and look for the plays that can be made. Scaling change happens quickly, the game is just getting reoriented, be ready for the next world…Personally I am hoping Ron Paul wins the 2012 election and we move away from this big bank world…but that is just me.

I hope you and yours are having a great holiday season.

The End & A Beginning…

People have talked about 2012 being the end, or ‘end times’ coming soon, I think that’s just a perception issue. Things are always ending and beginning. The sky is always falling as opportunities are opening up. There’s no need to freak-out, just try to understand what is going on in the field of play.

For the most part, nothing is really good or bad, but we make it so….

I am a little bummed because I think I have to say goodbye to a project/concept, but that just leaves room for something new to grow…Se La Vi…(such is life)…

Live long & prosper!
